A German communique states: " A great artillery battle on the Soinnio has spread to the north of the Ancre. Our curtain fire quickly suppressed enemy attacks. There has been bitter hand-to-hand fighting south-west of Sailly, and also at Vermandovillers, where we broke a French attack.

"We sanguinarily repulsed an attack between Fregicourt and Bouchavesnes."
