WELCOME AT THE STATION.

SPEECH BY THE MAYOR.

An enthusiastic reception was given to the complement of returned wounded and sick soldiers who arrived in Auckland by the afternoon express on Saturday. The hearty laughter and singing of the men as the train steamed into the station showed that though suffering from their wounds and from the effects of the experiences they had undergone, they were exceptionally cheery and high-spirited. Routing cheers greeted the returned men as they lined up inside the roped-ofl enclosure at the station.

Of the number who arrived in Auckland on Saturday 33 were fit to return to their homes, eight were admitted to the hospital as out-patients, and two—Nine Islanders—will bo accommodated at the Epsom Convalescent Rome. The arrangements for the reception were complete. Relatives of the men were admitted to the station, and outside a large crowd assembled to do honour to tho returned heroes. A guard from the Narrow Neck camp assisted the police in preserving order, and a troop of Ponsonby Boy Scouts was also present. -Among those within tho inclosuro were tho Mayor, Mr. J. 11. LJiinsvn, Mr. H. D. Heather, Colonel G. A. Ward, Majors P. A. Lindsay, F. A. Wood, and H. H. Browne, Captains (_!. C. S. Dyer and J. A. Wallingford.

Services Will Never be Forgotten Addressing the returned men, the Mayor bade them welcome. At his instance tfireo hearty cheers were given. He then proceeded to say that they had already been welcomed to New Zealand, but he would extend to them another warm welcome which would bo no less hearty, appreciative, or spontaneous than those that, had been accorded them elsewhere. The citizens of Auckland, lie said, were proud of the brave fellows who had fought for tho Empire. Welcome, and well done," added tho Mayor, " 1 trust you will all have a speedy restoration to health. Your services will never be forgotten, and they will over bo appreciated." Cheers were again given for the soldiers, for Trooper L. Craw fordD.C.M., and for Sister Lewis, and other nurses, who had returned by tho Willochra. The returned men'were then given the order to dismiss, and they were at once claimed by relatives and friends, who greeted them eagerly, and bore them away to l their respective destinations. |: Sister . Mabel Lever also returned to Auckland on Saturday". Sho was for 10 months engaged on the hospital ship Marama, and was in charge of one of the largest wards 011 the hospital ship.
