BRILLIANT ATTACK BY THE ITALIAN ALPINI.
ASCENT OF VERTICAL PRECIPICE BY IRON FOOTHOLDS. POSITION TAKEN BY BAYONET AFTER THREE REPULSES. Australian and N.Z. Cable. (Received 6.55 p.m.) MILAN. September 17. An Italian serai-official statement describes a brilliant feat of the Alpini in the Fiume Alps, which are thickly wooded to a height of 6000 ft, and finally present a perpendicular wall, scarred with steep fissures, which was considered before the war to be unnegotiable. The Alpini, however, used successive iron footholds, and scaled the vertical walls north-east of Mount Cauriol, and rushed the trenches with the bayonet. Thrice they were repulsed, but finally captured the whole position. The stubborn Tyrolese defenders were all killed except 100 who were taken prisoner.
