TYRES OF VEHICLES.
QUESTION OF WIDTH. MOUNT ALBERT COUNCIL'S VIEW. The town clerk of Newmarket wrote to the Mount Albert Borough Council last night conveying the following t recommendations of a joint committee of local bodies on the width of tyres, and suggesting that a copy be sent to the Auckland City Council for further consideration wheeled vehicles, including weight of vehicle in each case: Up to 30cwt, 2|in tyres; up to 60cwt, 4J,in tyres. Four-wheeled vehicles on each pair of wheels and including weight of vehicle: 30cwt, 2|in tyres; 60cwt, 3in tyros, and over 60cwt, a 6in tyre. ' i Mr. Clay said ho thought there should bo a difference between spring and ordinary carts. The regulation should also be only for new vehicles, and should not come into operation until January. There should be some uniformity in tyres, but it was generally thought that the Auckland Council had not given sufficient consideration to the matter. The city roads were much better than those outside. .Mr. Wilson said the regulations were too drastic. lie thought it would be much better if the various engineers made a report. Mr. Bradney remarked that the change was looming at the wrong time, and they should be careful about inflicting any new hardships on people just now. The Mayor said he did not think the matter had been thoroughly considered. He moved, and it was agreed, "That a letter be sent to the Newmarket Council stating that this council is quite in accord with increasing the width of tyres, but is not in accord with the proposals in their entirety, and that they will await a further reply from the Auckland City Council." ADOPTION BY MOUNT EDEN.
SUGGESTED TIME EXTENSION
At the meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council last evening the Streets Committeo recommended that the recommendation of the. conference held at Newmarket in regard to the width of tyres be approved, but that the by-law enforcing the same be not brought into force until January 1, 1918, in order to enable carriers to make the necessary alterations. Mr. J. W. Shackelford said it was considered that January 1, 1918, would allow ample time to owners of vehicles to comply with the new regulations without imposing any hardship. It was pointed out that in many cases new tyres would also mean new wheels. The committee's recommendation was adopted.
