POSITION IN f COUNTRY. • (Prom the HEBAID of September 19, 1866.) In the course of his address at the annua] cession of the Synodical Council of tie Church of England aid Ireland held yest terday His Honor the ■' Bishop of ■ New Zealand said: " I must"'continue to repeat my; request for larger means to carry out the work of the Church in;the country districts. The withdrawal of the grant from the society for the propagation of the Gospel has left us dependent upon oitr own", efforts and resource?. We have no reason to wish it otherwise. The country is opening, the labour is at a reasonable price. The return of prosperity and plenty will soon enable our country 'settlers to assist in maintaining their own clergymen. During the past financial year the inner' Waikato district, ministered to by the Rev. V. Lush, lias contributed more than trie proportion of his salary stipulated by the. Standing Committee..But still a larger fund is necessary to enable me to act with confidence in inviting clergymen from England. For want of this the arrival of the . clergyman expected to take charge of the, Upper Waikato has been delayed, arid that .district, including several thousand settlers, remains unprovided for, except by occasional visits of the Rev. B. Y. Ashweil and, myself. Some small progress, howaver; has been made. A church has been built at Ngaruawahia, another will soon be begun at Hamilton, and a . third at Alexandra. A church, to be called St. Peter's in the Forest, has been contracted for on the South Road. .... ■" In the Northern districts a wide field still remains unoccupied."
