MIMIC WARFARE, OPERATIONS AT TRENTHAM. Eight companies of the seventeenth reinforcements, stationed at Trentham camp, carried out combined operations on Tuesday, under the direction of Colonel C. R. Mac Donald, chief infantry instructor. The eight companies were split into two sides, one representing a brown force and the other a white force.
The general idea of the operations was that an eastern force (brown) was at war with a western force (white), and that the line of communication of the eastern force ran from Kaitoke to Lower Hutt. The special idea for tho brown force was that a battalion of the brown was railing from Kaitoke to Lower Hutt; but, learning that the bridge at Silverstream had been damaged, they detrained at Upper Hutt and went into billets there for the night. They also made dispositions to protect themselves from attack from any direction, having received information that hostile infantry* detachments were in the vicinity. One detachment of the whit* force was on the Akatarawa Road, and the 'special idea for them was that having learnt that a detachment of the brown forco was billeted at Upper Hutt, they should proceed thither from their point of assembly on the Akatarawa Road, sending out a patrol to gain information as to tho enemy's movements and then attack the eastern side .of Upper Hutt, endeavouring to turn the enemy's left flank. At the same time another detachment of tho white force, which was in the direction of Trentham camp, attacked Upper Hutt from the south-western side.
The main attack was that delivered on tho eastern side, and the brown force being inferior in numerical strength, the final decision was that ft would have been driven in.
The operations were greatly favoured by the weather, which was clear and bright, with a cool breeze to temper the heat of the sun, and the men followed all the movements and combinations with tho keenest interest.
