ASYLUM PATIENT'S DEATH.
OPEN VERDICT RETURNED. The inquest into the circumstances connected with the death of an inmate of the Avondale Mental Hospital, a returned soldier named Charles Sheard, aged 35 years, was resumed before Mr. F. V. Frazer, coroner, on Saturday. Evidence was given that the deceased was admitted to the institution on April 28 last. On September 2 he went out to work in the hospital grounds as usual, and he disappeared. A search was instituted, and on September 4 he was found lying in a pool of water in the grounds. Dr. R. M. Beattio, medical superintendent of the institution, said he had no doubt death was due to drowning, and in his opinion deceased lost his lifo by deliberate and determined suicide. It was stated that deceased had no relatives in New Zealand. The coroner returned a verdict that deceased met his death by drowning on September 2. There was no evidence to show how deceased got into the water.
