AUCKLAND FISH SUPPLY.
A WELLINGTON INQUIRY.
Inquiries into the initiation and development of the Auckland City Corporation fish market were recentily made on behalf of the Wellington City Council by Messrs. J. Godber and G. Frost and the town clerk of Wellington, Mr. J. R. Palmer. The result was made known to members of the Wellington City Council in a report by Mr. Godber, as chairman of the Public Health Committee. Having referred to the initiation of the scheme of wholesale auction on the waterfront, and its gradual growth, until the purchase of trawlers and the establishment of a proper fish market was absolute necessary, the report goes on to make special mention of the retail shop which the Auckland Council recently acquired. The report says that there can be no doubt that, despite the initial difficulties and loss, the Auckland City fish market venture is now an assured success, and that the Auckland Council is now seeking to purchase an additional vessel, and also intends to open another retail shop in the near future. The advent of the Auckland City Council into the fish trade has not had the effect of crippling private enterprise, but has undoubtedly stimulated private effort, as instanced by the additional fish shops which have been opened by the Trawling Company, doing the principal fish business in the city, since the couricil inaugurated its undertaking. The great effect— this is the most important feature been to cheapen the supply to all the citizens. The report goes on to say that fish has been cheapened in Auckland from 4d and 6d per lb to 2d, lid, and in somo cases Id per lb, and may be similarly reduced in price in Wellington.
