OFFENSIVE NOW DEVELOPED SOUTH OF THE SOMME.
ATTACK BY FRENCH ON FRONT OF TWELVE MILES.
FIRST LINE OF TRENCHES CAPTURED IN SEVERAL SECTORS.
VILLAGES OCCUPIED AFTER VIOLENT STRUGGLES. Australian and N.Z. Cable. (Received 11.30 p.m.) PARIS. September 5. A communique states:— " French troops attacked the enemy organisations on a front of \2l miles between Barleux and the southward of Chaulnes, on the Barleux-Denicourt front. We captured the first-line trenches, and occupied the approaches to Berny and the outskirts on the northward of Denicourt. "A brilliant assault northward and south-eastward of Soyecourt enabled us to capture another village. "Further south, between Vermandovillers and Chilly, after a violent struggle, our infantry carried two and a-half miles of the first position of the former German front, comprising several stronglyorganised lines of defence. The whole village of Chilly was captured. Wo occupied Hill 86, to the eastward, also the western outskirts of Chaulnes Woods.
"We hold portion of Vermandovillers, and surround it north and south."
