NEWS SUMMARY.
Auckland: Fourteen soldiers applied to the Claims Board yesterday for assistance. The Hon. James Allen stated yesterday that the Government had decided to repair Auckland Government House. Twenty-seven men enrolled in the city yesterday, and of that number 13 were accepted, seven were deferred, and seven were rejected. A deputation in regard to the treatment that Auckland has received in respect of the fitting-out of transports waited upon the Minister for Defenco yesterday. The' hearing was resumed in the Supreme Court yesterday in the retrial of a Northern Wairoa farmer, who is charged with a serious offence against a girl under sixteen. The trial of five natives for alleged complicity in the Maungapohatu affray in ronnection with the arrest of the "prophot" Rua, will shortly be commented m the Supreme Court. Strong arguments are advanced by the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, in an interview, against the use of tho Metropolitan Grounds for the purposes of a university site, New Zealand: Mrs. Matilda Bardsley, of Dunedin, committed suicide while in a depressed state of mind. The Minister in Charge of Tourist and Health Resorts anticipates a busy tourist season for 1916-17. .Two • soldiers died from cerebrospinal meningitis-one at Masterton and tho other at Feathersbon. The driver of a baker's cart, named Uexander McAuley, had his skull fractured as the result of a level-crossing accident near Lower Hutt. The Imperial Supplies Department has paid to New Zealand producers the sum of £12.033,749 for meat and £917,205 lor cheese.' It also has advanced £42,693 for ?cheelit«. British and Foreign: Canon Edward Moore, the noted Dante scholar, is dead. A. soldier discovered a box containing treasure valued at £40,000 in a trench at Picardy. Aitken, the winner of a 300-mile automobile race in America., averaged 97 miles per hour. ' The War: The Somme offensive has-'been continued successfully. Australians defeated the First Prussian Guards at Mouquet Farm. The Italians now occupy 300 square miles of Austrian territory. The terms of the allied Noto have been accepted, by the Greek Govornraeni. The surrender of the capital of German East Africa, is reported.
During' August 189 aeroplanes were brought down, 121 of that number being Gorman machines.
