To-dat's issue of the Atcklaxd WEEKLY - News contains an exceptionally interestins series of photographs, dealing for the most part with the British advance cm the western front, The double-page includes (splendid photographs associated with the "great usk Theso d ! P .' ct German dead in the trenches, British soldiers on the way to battle, and other features in connection with the operations. Other photographs in the issue , also give a grim idea of the effectiveness of the offensive against the Germans in France. A most striking photograph shows a German counter-attack being repulsed by the French at the battle of Champagne. This is a most reflistic ~ picture. The French trenches can be «en in the foreground, farther away many of the German dead are lying on the battle-field, and in the distance the German trenches are noticed. The outstanding recent event of the war has been the entry of Roumania into hostilities on the side of the allies. In _ connection with this event a splendid view of the Tomes Pass, which leads from Roumania into Austro-Hungary, will be viewed with attention, as will also a photograph of Galatz, the chief port of Roumania, on the River Danube. There are also excellent portraits of King Ferdinand and his beautiful consort Queen Marie. Tho -smashing blows delivered to the AustroGerman troops by the Russian sol diers has aroused general admiration, therefore a photograph showing a great ! number of Russian soldiers in France assembled to meet Russian members of Parliament on a visit to Paris, is vested with more than ordinary interest. A striking series of flashlight photographs dealing with the recent night manoeuvres of New Zealand's seventeenth reinforcement draft forms an attractive pago. Several other war topics are admirably illustrated. The Roll of Honour contains the portraits of a large number of New Zealand's heroes. Besides the war pictures, a variety of local events are illustrated. There" me photographs of the steamers Tongariro and Stormbird, wrecked on the New Zealand coasts within the past week, in addition to : >photographs connected with the recent • fire at Waiuku and the outbreak* at tho i Boys' High School at Now Plymouth.
