STATEMENT BY MINISTER.
Tee announcement that the Government '; has decided to repair the Auckland Go- "' vernment House, which was damaged by
-- fire a few weeks ago, was made by the Minister for Defence, Hon. Jas. Allen, in replying to a deputation of carpenters arid others, who waited upon him yesterday s in regard to the question of work for un- ; employed tradesmen. "I suppose," said the Minister, "that there is a several thousand pounds' job there. _ I do not say whether the decision will Ibe adhered to or whether I agree with it personally, but that is the ' decision, and it should keep a few men employed." In reply to a subsequent Question Mr. Allen said that he could not say when the work, which would be carried out by the Defence Department, would be commenced.
