A communique states: "The Germans in the region of Riga attacked Lettish battalions, whose counter-offensive drove them back with severe losses. " Battles are raging in the directions of Zolonov and Halicz, in Eastern Galicia. We drove the enemy out of fortified positions southward of Rafailov, in the region of Kappul Mountain, and also in the region of Dorna Matra, in the Carpathians, capturing several heights. "Fierce fighting continues in the Caucasus region at Ognot." (Received 5.33 p.m.) AMSTERDAM. September .3. A German communique states: "The Russian forces northward of Zborow and also at Birzfeny were repulsed." Referring to Russian activities in the Carpathians, the communique admits that the enemy stormed the Ploska height, southward of Zielona. A German communique shows that Prince Leopold of Bavaria commands the army group hitherto commanded by von Hindenburg on the Russian front from Riga to Galicia.
