PART OF VILLAGE OF GUINCHY ALSO CAPTURED. AIRCRAFT ENGAGED IN MANY FIGHTS WITH GERMANS. THREE ENEMY MACHINES DESTROYED AND FOUR DAMAGED. Australian and N.Z. Cable. (Received 10.15 cm.) LONDON, September i. * Sir Douglas Haig reports: "In co-operation with the French wo attacked at several points and captured part of Guinchy and the whole of Guilleraont. "East of Moquet Farm we gained ground and captured several hundred prisoners. "Our new front runs 500 yds east of Guillemont, from Guinchy to near Failemon Farm. " Our aircraft did most useful work co-operating with the artillery and. the infantry. Enemy aeroplanes desperately attempted to inter'fere, but we successfully engaged them in many fights. We destroyed three machines and damaged at least four. We lost three machines." LONDON. September 3. An earlier report by Sir Douglas Haig stated that the night was generally quiet. There was* sharp fighting this morning near Mouquct Firm, and southward of Thiepval on the banks of the Ancre, and at Failemon Farm upon our right. We gained ground in these operations.
