LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

i BUTTER AND EGGS.

1 ' Sir,—l notice in the HfeEAiD of Ist I• .'"■ insi, that the Dairy Protluco Committee I ha? stated the wholesale pries of butter •'.. and' eggs for the ensuing .week at lid per Mb best farmors' butter,,and lOd per dozen eggs. .These low prices are con- |:' tinually beingvflnoted, and are very mis- ?. leading, Farmers' butter is sold at Is Gd pen lb, and % creamery butter at la Bd, and I have been paying tlieso prices now for sorao weeks. Eggs are now down to Is 6d 'per, dozen.' 'Why such a great difference between the wholesale prices quoted and the retail prices we have to pay? Who gets the 8d per lb profit? Parnell. R. E. M. Beckett.

"EPSOM AMALGAMATION.

Sir,—The roads and footpaths in Epsom arc- a credit to the district. We will allow tho'TManukau Road is a bit muddy in places, but I maintain that at its worst it is equally as good as scores of streets in the city, and bettor than some. If the City of Auckland cannot maintain its own roads it certainly cannot maintain ours. We'are practically a rich and undeveloped suburb, and would make' a very valuable asset for the city to borrow money on. Our . valuations would be increased, consequently our rates would riso to just whatever the city liked to make them. Why not rotain our own self-government and spend our money as we please? If the ratepayers of Epsom are not satisfied with a road board, but want something more aristocratic, why not form a borough, and if it was thought advisable, amalgamate with One-treo Hill district? That would bo preferable to giving outsolved body and soul to tho city. Old R.ATEFATER.

CITY STREETS.

Sir,—l have been living in Albany Road nearly four years. Surely the Mayor, when he went on a tour of inspection of the streets did not visit Albany Road. The City Council has not done anything to tho road since they took it over from tho syndicate, except occasionally scratching', weeds from either side. lam not at all surprised at the eulogy of tho Mayor with referenco to many of the streets in Ponsonby, and elsewhere, because those in the former place have been recently doiW. But that does not alter the fact of the, bad .state of Albany Road at the present time. Drivers of motor-cars dread going through that street because of tho danger of bursting a tyre. Again, a street running from Curran Street appears to mo to need attention— remove grass growing on ono sido of the thoroughfare. Tho City Council, instead of lavishly expending money, on works which are not absolutely needed, should devote more to the proper upkeep of our streets than heretofore. Square Deal.
