ADMIRALTY DENIAL OF GERMAN NAVAL CLAIMS.
NO BRITISH BATTLESHIP DAMAGED BY SUBMARINE. ENEMY ADMITS DAMAGE TO DREADNOUGHT WESTFALEN. Australian and N.Z. Cable. (Received 9.33 p.m.) LONDON. August 23. The Admiralty denies the truth of the German assertion that a submarine severely damaged a British battleship. There is not a particle of truth in the fantastic story. (Received 9.35 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, August 23. A semi-official statement published in Berlin admits that the battleship Westfalen, which is of the Nassau class, was hit by a torpedo on August 19, but says that she can be repaired, and that she remained capable of manoeuvring. It is alleged that the second torpedo missed her.
