POLICE COURT NEWS.

FIREMAN GUILTY OF ASSAULT. A ship's fireman named Garratt. Dunn was charged, before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., in the Police Court- yesterday, with, using obscene language and with assaulting Sergeant McDonnell and Constable Heaslip. Evidence showed that as the result of accused's behaviour «in Queen Street the sergeant and constable went on board the steamer Devon to get defendant's name in order to prosecute him for using bad ' language. As they were walking along the deck accused picked up a piece of wood in a threatening manner, and was . in the act of hitting the constable when somebody warned the police Officers, and . accused was. promptly thrown down c-nd arrested.

For the assault accused was sentenced to one month's hard labour in Wellington gaol, and ordered to come up for sentence on the other charge. ROBBED HIS EMPLOYER. A young man named Arthur James Wil- . liams pleaded guilty to converting to* his own use the sum of 17s 2d, money received on behalf of his employer, H. Horepool. Senior-Sergeant Rutledge stated that accused had been employed by Mr. Horspool to deliver milk and collect accounts, and •was paid £2 15s a week. Another man took him on the round for the first week, and the next week he was sent to do the > round by himself. He did not return, and it was found that he had collected various small sums and given receipts for them. Accused was sentenced to two months' hard labour, and in reply to a request to be given a chance to enlist he was told that he could wait until the sentence was served.

MISCELLANEOUS. A first offender for drunkenness forfeited her bail, and another was convicted and discharged. For soliciting Rose Wright was sentenced to 14 days* hard labour, and for procuring liquor while prohibited Martha Milliard was ordered to be sent to Pakatoa for 12 months.
