PAHIATUA ELECTION.

POLL TO BE TAKEN TO-DAY.

THREE-CORNERED CONTEST.

The by election at Pahiatua for the purpose of electing a member of the House of Representatives in the place of the late Mr. J. H. Escott will be held to-day. The three candidates are Messrs. G. Harold Smith, R. B. Ross and G. D. McFarlane. Mr. Smith has been selected as the Reform Party's candidate and he is also the official candidate of the National Government. This is in accordance with the arrangement made on the formation of the National Ministry to the effect that when a vacancy occurred the leader of the party to which the late member belonged should have the right to nominate a candidate for the by-election and that nomination would be supported by the leader of the other party concerned in the ■formation of the National Cabinet. Mr. Ross, who formerly represented the electorate as a supporter of Sir Joseph Ward, is also seeking election as a supporter of the National Government. Mr. McFarlane is the nominee of the Labour Party. This will be the first by-election since the formation of the National Government.
