AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY

THE MOUNT EDEN SITE.

CLAUSE TO BE WITHDRAWN.

.— SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.]

WELLINGTON. 'Wednesday. The Government has decided to withdraw the new clause which it was intended to insert in the " Washing-up - ' Bill in the Legislative Council providing that existing reservations over land on the south side of Mount Eden, generally known as the Mount Eden Reserve, shall be cancelled, and that the land shall be reserved as a site for the purposes of the Auckland University College.

OBJECTIONS TO PROPOSAL.

VIEWS OF PROFESSORIAL BOARD-

The intention of the Government to set apart a portion of the Mount Eden Reserve as a site for the Auckland University College was discussed at a meeting of the Professorial Board yesterday morning. The following resolution was carried :— — " The Professorial Board of the Auckland University College desires to express its unanimous and considered opinion that the proposed site pt Mount Eden is entirely unsuited to the work of the college, and that the effect of locating the new college on this site would be to cripple and paralyse university work in this city. The board is prepared, if desired, to state its professional reasons for this opinion, and respectfully submits that its views, as representing the expert judgment of the university teachers concerned should receive due consideration-"'

Members of the Auckland University College Students' Association also met yesterday, and it was resolved to send the following protest by telegraph to the Prime Minister, the Minister for Education, and the Auckland members of Parliament :— The students of the Auckland University College desire to protest emphatically against the allocation of a site at Mount Eden, in that it fails to cater for the needs of students, and is absolutely unsuitable for university purposes." A special meeting of the District Court of Convocation will be held at the college this afternoon to discuss the matter-
