August X A French communique states: "There has been a bombardment with large-calibre shell of our lines south of Mort Homme, on the Verdun front. On the right bank of the Meuse w© effected several attacks extending from the river to south of Fleury Wood, and immediately east erf Vacherauville, and westwards and southwards of Thiaumont work, also in the ravine south of Fleury our troops carried several German trenches and an organised point of support. We captured in the course of these actions about 800 prisoners and a dozen machine-guns. Enemy counter-attacks in the region of Vacherauville were repulsed with grenades. In the sectors Vaux and Chapitre the bombardment continues violently, "Previous to our success the Germans, after a series of unsuccessful gas attacks, gained slightly at Vaux, Chapitre, and Chenois Woods."
