BOARDINGHOUSE THEFTS.
ARREST OF A WOMAN.
Retorts of thefts from boardinghouses in the vicinity of the Supreme Court have caused the police to place a careful watch in the locality. As the result of their vigilance a middle-aged woman named Jessie Jacobs appeared before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday charged with breaking and entering the boardinghouse of Mrs. Scherff, in Eden Street, with intent to commit a crime.
Sub-Inspector Mcllveney said that in the early hours of that morning Constables Trotter and Wallington saw the woman approach the boardinghouse stealthily and enter it. Constable Trotter followed, and arrested the woman just as she had lit a candle, and was apparently about to commit a crime. The sub-inspector said it would take time to make inquiries concerning the numerous thefts that had been reported, and he asked that the accused be remanded until Friday next. The remand was granted.
INTEMPERANCE. Two days spent in the police station by Charlotte Campbell, who was charged with being found drunk and with committing a breach 'of her prohibition order, was regarded as sufficient punishment, and tho defendant was convicted and discharged. Three first offenders, charged with drunkenness, were convicted and ordered to forfeit their bail, 10s in each case. Another first offender was convicted and fined ss.
