ACCIDENT ON A STEAMER.

CHIEF ENGINEER HURT.

The steamer Putiki, which had been undergoing overhaul at Auckland, and sailed for Wellington on Wednesday night, returned to Auckland yesterday owing to an accident to Chief Engineer Graham. Tne ship had reached Cape Colville at about 7.45 a.m. yesterday, when the engineer proceeded to test the heat of the bearings. While he was so engaged, • his fingers were severely crushed by the machinery, two being especially badly injured. It was judged wise to return to port so that the injuries could be properly attended to, and the vessel arrived back at about 4 p.m. The Putiki will sail to-day at 7 a.m., leaving the chief engineer ashore. The injured man resides in Nelson.
