FIRE BRIGADE PRAISED.

THE NEWMARKET OUTBREAK. HANDSOME CHEQUES RECEIVED. In recognition of the valuable service rendered by the Newmarket Fire Brigade in suppressing, after great difficulty, an outbreak of fire which ocurred on the premises of the Taupo Totara. Timber Company at Newmarket on Sunday, June 18, the company has donated £100 to the Fire Brigade Equipment Fund. The firm has also given £20 to be divided among the firemen who assisted to quell the fire, while the brigade's social fund has been augmented by a donation of £1 Is by Mr. J. Dempsey. Several letters expressing appreciation of the efforts of the members of the brigade in suppressing the fire were also received by the Newmarket Borough Council last evening. In forwarding the cheques, the Timber Company stated that it wished to convey to the brigade its most grateful thanks. It also requested. the council to convey to the injured firemen its best wishes for their speedy recovery.

Mr. J. Dempsey, whose place of business is a few doors removed from the Timber Company's yard, also wrote expresing his appreciation of the efforts of the firemen

The licensee of the Royal George Hotel, Mr. D. Dunne, wrote in a similar strain. He said he had no hesitation in saying, as an ex-member of two of Australia's foremost fire brigades, that the brigade accomplished one of the finest "saves" in the history of fire-fighting in the Dominion. Captain Watts and his men were entitled to receive the highest commendation.

Captain E. J. Watts wrote forwarding the account for the fire- He suggested that the council should officially thank the Railway and the Epsom Fire Brigades and the men of the Mount Eden military guard for their valuable assistance in helping to quell the fire. He shatacl that Firemen Simpson and Pailby, of the Newmarket Brigade, and Fireman Woods, had been injured, and were as yet unable to follow their usual occupations. The members of the council expressed their very high appreciation of the action of the donors of the cheques.
