Dr. V. F. Usher, of Auckland, who has been on a holiday trip to'.Suva, returned by the Makura yesterday.
Major A. Harris, M.L.C., and Mr. A. Harris, M.P. for Waitemata, returned to Wellington by last evening's express train.
The Hon. J. A. Borthwick, of Christchurch, and Mrs. Borthwick were passengers for Sydney by the Makura last evening-
Mr. Oliver Nicholson, Mayor of Mount Eden, left for Wellington by, the mid-day Main Trunk express yesterday. He expects to return on Saturday.
Lieutenant H. B. Maunsell, of Masterton, who returned to Auckland from England by the Ruahine, left for the South by last evening's express train.
Mr. John Court left for Sydney by the Makura last evening. He intends spending the winter in Australia, and will be absent from Auckland about two months.
Mr. E. Page, S.M., of Whangarei, and Mrs. Page were in Auckland vesterdav, staying at the Grand Hotel. They left again for Whangarei last night by the Manaia. • ....
Mr. and Mrs. A. R D. Watson were passengers for Sydney vesterdav by the Makura. , They intend visiting New South Wales and Queensland for some three or four months.
Commissioner.H. C. Hodder, of the Salvation Army, will arrive from Wellington on Saturday accompanied by Mrs. Hodder. He will attend the opening of the new orphan home at Heme Bay on ""Monday afternoon. *
Dr. A. W. Averill, .bishop of Auckland, who left for Rotorua on June 12, owing to indisposition, is greatly improved in health. He has left Rotorua for; Te Aroha. and will return to Auckland by. way of Thames, reaching the city on Saturday morning. ••■•*.-
The Rev. J. Hughes was.a passenger by the Makura from Vancouver yesterday morning. Mr. Hughes, who is a native of Auckland, has spent some considerable time in church work in America, and has now returned to take up his residence in this city.
The Rev. J. A. Luxford, C.M.G., chaplain to the New Zealand forces, who left with the main body of the Expeditionary Force, and was wounded on Gallipoli, losing a leg .as a result, has been appointed principal' chaplain on the i\ew Zealand Headquarters Staff- in London. He will reside at Walton-on-Thamee. •
Sir William Charles Cooper, of Sydney, was a through passenger for Sydney by the Makura yesterday. He left Australia by a previous steamer, intending to go to England to see his three sons, who are in the army, but, he was,overtaken, by ~ Alness; just before the vefij&l re&chejS; Honolulu, and was compelled to return to Australia.
Commodore C. ■F. Henderson, who is in charge of 121© : naval ; establishments in Sydtoey, and who has been spending a months leave in New " Zealand* returned to Sydney by the Makura last evening. During) ~ Commodore Henderson's absence Captain C. Hi Morgan, commanding officer of the Naval College, Jervis Bay, has had temporary control of the Sydney naval establishments.
Sergeant Gavin Alexander, of the New Zealand Signalling Companyj who l has been awarded the D.C.M. for conspicuous good work' : and devotion to duty,.was, a member. of! ihe College Rifles, and prior to his enlisting was in the employV of Messrs. George Fraser and Sons,■ engineers! ■■■ He had previously come under the notice of his superior officers far his bravery. Sergeant Alexander's parents reside in Epsom.
Mr. E. G. Aickin, clerk to the Otamate* County Council, tendered his resignation at the last,meeting, of tie -council, as. it was his_ intention to offer his services- to the military authorities/ as -soon as possible. The council unsuccessfully endeavoured to get Mr. Aickm'to reconsider-his decision, as it was of the opinion that he was doing good work in, assisting ' the Recruiting Board, but eventually it, was decided to grant him leave "of absence on half-pay. Mr: Aickin has - two brothers already in the firing-line^
The Rev. J. Q. A. Henry, D.D., of Los Angeles, California, a well-known evangelist,, is a passenger for Sydney by the Makura. Dr. Henry about six years ago conducted an interdenominational mission in New Zealand, with the assistance of Mr. C. A. Potts, a singer. Dr. Henry is accompanied 4>y the Ray., Gv.Wrij Campbell, Ph.D.-, who specialises among men and young people, and who will be in general charge of the work of organisation in connection with a mission in Australia. In Sydney the party will be augmented by the addition of a singer. - The missions will be conducted under the auspices of the Evangelisation Society of New South Wales. .u-,& , - -•■ \
