OBSTINATE GERMAN ATTACKS NEAR SMORGON.

NOT AN ATTEMPT TO PIERCE THE RUSSIAN LINE. ENEMY HAS NEITHER MEN NOR TIME NECESSARY. Times and Sydney Sun Services. (Eeceived June 26. 5.10 p.m.) LONDON. TUNE 25. The London Times correspondent at Petrograd states that despite obstinate German attacks south of Smorgon, 45 miles south-east of Vilna, the Russian military authorities do not consider that they represent an attempt to pierce the line. It is believed that the German forces are inadequate, while time will not permit of the methods employed at Verdun.
