GERMAN GENERALS PUNISHED FOR FAILURE AT VERDUN
PERSISTENT RUMOURS OF THREE RETIREMENTS. ENEMY STRIVING TO CAPTURE TWO NORTHERN FORTS. PARIS, JUNE 23. The Germans have renewed their great offensive on the Verdun front, uninterruptedly bombarding all positions on both banks of the Meuse. The 24 hours' bombardment on the right bank is interpreted to mean that the Germans are striving to capture Forts Souville and Tavannes, north of Verdun, in order to spare reinforcements for other fronts. A semi-official message from Rome states that it is persistently rumoured in neutral countries that both Generals Falkenhayn and Conrad have been removed from their posts as chiefs of the German General Staff, also that General Schach, the German commander of the forces attacking Verdun, has been retired.
