SUBTERRANEAN RUMBLINGS
INLAND FROM HASTINGS. . i SETTLERS MUCH ALARMED. Ist TELEGRAFH. —OWN* CORRESPONDENT.) Waxganxti, Sunday. Loup subterranean rumblings have been reported inland of Hastings, Hawke's Bay. Stock on the Kereru station were terrified, uttering cries and moans. The rumbling commenced about one o'clock on Friday morning, and continued all day and evening, the noises occurring every few minutes. Towards midnight they increased in intensity, and between midnight and one o'clock on Saturday morning sounded like peels of thunder. The duration of the regular noises was over six minutes, with intervals of ten minutes duration. A brilliant glare could be. seen in the direction of Ngauruhoe, north-west of Kereru. The buildings of the station were shaken considerably, and it is stated that the settlers were much, alarmed.
