ADVANCE WEST OF LUCK

WITHIN 25 MILES OF SCOVEL. REPORTED REVOLT IN BOSNIA. GREEKS AND BULGARIANS FIGHT LOSS OF A BRITISH DESTROYER. The Russians arc still advancing west and south-west of Luck, and are within 25 miles of the important railway junction of Kovel. An Austrian counterattack was repulsed near Kolki, north-east of Luck, and the Russians pierced the defences of the northern bank of the Styr River. The Anstrians have been thrown back towards Brody, which is on the railway from Pubno to Lemberg, The Russians are round three sides of C«rnovitz, the capita! of Bukovina. A rumour circulated in Ronmania that the Austrians had withdrawn, but this lacks confirmation. The population of Bosnia is reported to be in revolt. The Government is not permitting the publication in Vienna of Russian communiques. The Russians are making strong attacks near Baranovitch, on the north side of the Pripet marshes. Their artillery on the Dvinsk front is preventing German offensives. Greek and Bulgarian detachments fought for several hours near Serres, in Eastern Macedonia. The result is not known. The Greek Government has decided on the genera! demobilisation of the army. The situation is described as still grave. Even isolated villages are now feeling the pressure of the allied blockade. The Italians have had the better of fierce fighting on the Trentino front. Not only have they repulsed Austrian attacks with heavy losses, but they have advanced north-east of Asiago. A Bulgarian division has arrived on the Isonzo front. German attacks on Thiaumont, north of Verdun, broke down with heavy enemy losses, as also did grenade attacks on Avocourt Redoubt. The French have held the ground south of Mort Homme they recently captured. The British destroyer Eden— one of the earlier type—has been sunk in the English Channel through collision. One officer and 30 men were saved.
