HEMP SHIPMENTS.
UNRELIEVED CONGESTION.
POSITION IN AUCKLAND.
Little relief from congestion in the storage of hemp in Auckland has been experienced during the past month, and from inquiries made on Saturday the position is not likely to improve in the immediate future, despite the shipping space promised some weeks ago by the Prime Minister, the Right Hon. W. F. Massey. Relief from congestion is expected in August, when the usual winter closing of several mills will take place, thus lessening the quantity of hemp reaching the stores. More liberal allowance of shipping space is also expected to be available.
It is pointed out that, judging by the Government statistics, Wellington appears to be in a more fortunate position than Auckland in the matter of hemp shipments. During the last four months Auckland exported only 1062 tons of hemp and 103 tons of tpw, as against 6748 tons of hemp and 736 tons of tow exported from Wellington.
