THE AMERICAN PRESIDENCY.
The nomination of Mr. Hughes as the candidate of the Republican Party for the American Presidency disposes of the expectation that the foreign policy of Mr. Wilson might be challenged in November by a representative American whose sympathies were unqualifiedly and outspokenly with Belgium and against Germanism in every shape or form. Mr. Roosevelt, the protagonist of American devotion to international law, was nominated by the Progressive Party, but is reported to have conditionally declined candidature, thus leaving the door open to amalgamation. Mr. Elihu Root, whose views are generally in accord with those of Mr. Roosevelt, received little support and the Republicans refused to agree with Mr. Roosevelt's suggestion that a compromise might be made by the joint Repub lican-Progressive nomination of Senator Lodge. In the event of the breach between Republicans and Progressives not being healed, the re-election of Mr. Wilson—the only possible Democratic candidate— appears to be certain. If Mr. Hughes is finally accepted as a compromise candidate a very ,different result may be hoped for; and of Mr. Hughes it may be said that, although he has carried to an extreme the virtue of silence on the great international question, his associations are with men who have spoken freely and spoken well.
