CLEANING MATERIALS.

i O.ve notion that tends to economy con- '•■ cerns cleaning materials. Soda "is so, cheap that we are inclined to use it very j lavishly. Some water is hard that for; laundry purposes some kind of softening! material is needed. In most cases people! use more than is required. It is •well to; find out how much soda is necessary to ; prevent the soap from forming a curd in. the water, and not to use more than the! least amount of soda needed. It is well also remember that soaking soiled gar- i ments for several hours in lukewarm -water helps to economise labour as well as soda. ' Even in household cleaning soda might! be used less freely. For Linoleum and ! tiles no soda is needed, and the dirt is I removed quite easily provided that plentv of lukewarm water is used. For the! scrubbing of dirty boards silver sand an-! swers better than soda, and is infinitely! cheaper. All that has to be done is to! sprinkle a little over the wet board before i scrubbing it. No soda is needed for the' washing up of the greasiest dishes. The! grease is loosened just as well if plenty i iof really hot water is used. As very few' hands are hardened enough to bear such, hot water, a small dish, mop, costing two- i pence, should be used, or the dishcloth might be used twisted round a wooden' spoon. j
