FRENCH MAKE PROGRESS ON VERDUN FRONT.

CAPTURE OF FORT ON SLOPE OF HILL 304.

SUCCESSFUL ATTACK ON A GERMAN TRENCH.

High Commissioner's Cabled Message.

LONDON. MAY 18.

Between the Oise and the Aisne a strong enemy reconnaissance which attempted to enter the French lines in the neighbourhood of Guennevieres. was counter-attacked and dispersed, leaving dead on

the ground

On the left bank of the Meuse, after lively artillery preparation, the Germans repeatedly attempted in the course of the night to take a redoubt in Avocourt Wood, but were repulsed by the French fire with serious losses. About three o'clock this morning a successful attack was made on a German trench north of Hill 287, half-a-mile south of the village of Haucourt, the occupants being either killed or made prisoners. At the same hour, after a sanguinary engagement, the French took possession of a small German fort firmly organised on the north-eastern slope of Hill 304. On the right bank of the Meuse, and in the Woevre, there is a reciprocal bombardment.
