AIRMEN HAVE A FIELD DAY ON TUESDAY.
FINE WEATHER LEADS TO MANY AIR COMBATS. FRENCH TAKE HEAVY TOLL OF THE ENEMY. (Received May 18. 11.45 p.m.) LONDON. MAY 17. Sir Douglas Haig reports that in consequence of fine weather prevailing there were 28 combats in the air on Tuesday. Three German aeroplanes were driven down, one at Lille and one at Vitry, while the third was overturned. Two British scout aeroplanes are missing. A German communique claims that Lieutenant Immelmann has brought down his fifteenth aeroplane near Douai. A British aeroplane was brought down at Fournes, two officers being taken prisoner. A French communique reports 33 aeroplane actions in the Verdun sector. The French brought down three German aeroplanes, and lost none. The French also brought down two German aeroplanes at Rezonville and Ban le Sa.pt, in the Vosges, while a French pilot brought down a German aeroplane north of Vic-sur-Aisne, five miles west of Soissons. Both wings of the enemy machine became detached during the fall.
