OBITUARY.

MR. JAMES LARKIN. i i The funeral of the late Mr. James Larkin, ' a well-known contractor, took place yesterday in the Symonds Street Cemetery. I Many friends of 40 years' standing were present at the'graveside, and messages of x condolence were received from all parti of the Dominion. Born in Ireland in 1840, the deceased arrived in Victoria in 1855- After living on the and Bendigo goldfields from 1857 to 1862 he removed to OtagQ and participated in the Dunstan River goldfields rush. In 1864 he arrived in, Auckland, and with the exception of two years spent at the Thames, had resided here ever since. In 1869 he married th« daughter of the late Mr. Patrick Coyle, / by whom he was predeceased. He is survived Tby two sons, Mr. W. Larkin, manager of Sharland and Company, Wellington and Mr. H. Larkin, S.M-, Otakij and three daughters. He followed th& occupation of a railway contractor, and' was associated with the opening up of most • districts in the province. He was alsa connected with the construction of the, Auckland tramways and drainage, and road works for most of the local boroughs. MR. WILLIAM JACKSON. An old and respected resident of North Auckland, Mr. William .Jackson, died at Hikurangi the other day. The deceased t who came from Cheshire, England, -arrived in New Zealand with his wife in the sailing ship Waikato in 1879. He resided , at Kawakawa until 1896, when he removed to Hikurangi where, until four years ago, he "was .'employed in the Hikurangi mines. Mr. Jackson underwent an operation for internal troubles about a year ago, and since then has gradually declined, his end i being not unexpected. «By his unassuming and kindly manner he made many friends throughout the North. Deceased is survived by his widow, three sons, Messrs. D. L., W. C, and E. Jackson, of Hikurangi; and two daughters, Mrs. W. J. Littin, of Kaiwaka and Mrs. C. J. C. Powell, of Opuawhanga* =
