PROBLEM OF HOUSE RENTS.

At a public meeting convened in Wellington recently to discuss the alleged increase in local house rents, the following resolution was unanimously carried:'"That this meeting of workers protest against the exploitation of rentpayers by the unwarranted increase in rents since the commencement of the war, and calls upon Parliament effectively to remedy the injustice by passing a Bill fixing rents at pre-war rates. It also points out that the supply of houses in Wellington at present is entirely inadequate, whole families being boused in one and two rooms through lack of suitable dwellings. This meeting urges the City Council, or, failing that body, the Government, immediately to proceed with an adequate building scheme to meet the urgent demand. This meeting is farther of the opinion that to secure fair treatment for occupiers a Rentpayers* Association should be formed."
