WORKING FOR THE ALLIES.

ACTIVITY IN AMERICA.

MAKING WAR MATERIALS.

[by telegraph.—ow>: coiuir.sroxrjE.vr.]

CHMSTCffuncrj, Thursday. The following is an extract from a letter received by a Christchurch resident from Mr. S. H. Chamberlain, general manager of the Alabama Power Company, Birmingham, United States, and formerly engineer to the Christchurch Tramway Board .-—"When one reads of so many sacrifices and the suffering of women and children, it all makes one feel as if one could help, and yet no matter what one hears against our country it's a blessing for the allies we are not fighting but manufacturing for them. Our company is interested in an ordnance company in Anniston, which is manufacturing 50,000 shells for the English Government. James Mitchell, our president, alone put £12.000 in the company to get it started. The first lot of shells is being shipped this week, and the company is now making 12,000 a month. We also have built three electric steel furnaces, each turning out ten tons every seven hours. To help supply the demand all the factories in this district, and, in fact, all over the country, are working 24 hours a day, and fully 90 per cent, are making war materials. All this spells one thing to us—the final victory of the allies."
