OVERCROWDING IN SCHOOLS.
BOARD'S POWER DEFINED.
The question arose recently in connection with one of the Wanganui primary r Jiools as to tho powers of the local Education Board in regard to overcrowding. The secretary of the board was recently instructed to write to the head teacher of the school in question, directing him to send some of the pupils to a school in the same locality, and the right of the board to do so was questioned. A copy of the letter to the teacher was forwarded to the Minister for Education, with a request for advice on the point. The Hon. J. A. Hanan has replied " that the board has power under the Act to direct that children shall not be admitted to a school beyond the accommodation provided therein. Similarly, the board has power,' ho added, "to direct that the attendance shall be reduced to a reasonable limit by the exclusion of prpils already on the roll who could quite as conveniently attend another school having space accommodation. I am aware that there is no specific provision in the Act to either effect, but the ceneral powers of section 33 should be sufficient."
