BOMBARDMENTS WITHOUT ATTACKS

A successful raid has been made by the British on the German trenches at Richebourg Lavoue. Three attacks by the enemy west of the Pilkem«Ypres road were repulsed. Fighting at St. Eloi last week, the Canadians inflicted heavy losses on the enemy.
A message received in London from General Townshend states that the relief of Kut<el»Amara is expected in the near future.
Attacks by Italian infantry forced the enemy to retire from positions above the Ledro Valley, in the Trentino. Some ground has been gained by a methodical offensive. The German Note to the United States declares that the Sussex was not attacked, but that asother vessel in the neighbourhood was torpedoed.
Hostilities at Verdun have been confined to artillery bombardment directed principally against the French positions at Haucourt.
