EXPERIMENTAL FARMING.
CLAIMS OF THE SOufH ISLAND.
In the course of a- recent interview in the South, tho Hon. W. D. Mac Donald, Minister for Agriculture, stated that it was tho intention of the Government to establish experimental farms in the South Island. The number would most likely be three, and the localities would bo deter, mined by climatic conditions. Tho variations in rainfall and fertility in the South Island were considerable, and this had to bo taken into consideration. It was the Department's policy to lossen tho size of individual farms instead of adliering to the principle of great areas, such as Rua. kura, where tho experiments cover some 600 acres. Lessons in fruit culture were not being lost sight of, and farms for this purpose had been established in tho North Island, where valuable information had, been obtained. I
