THE EXPORT OF HIDES.
EMBARGO CRITICISED.
Tke following resolution was passed at a recent meeting of the Marlborough Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union: " That this executive views with apprehension the reduced price offered for fat cattle, which, in our opinion, is due to the restrictions placed upon the export of hides of over 451b; that the enormous loss entailed on the farming community is not justified by a proportionate saving to the Government in the cost of leather,'it being evident that the embargo is entirely in the interests of the dealers and tanners, who are enabled to exploit the producers by offering the producers as a maximum the minimum prices fixed by the Government ; and this executive strongly urges the Government to'commandeer the re-, quirements at market values and allow freedom of export for any surplus within the British v Empire, or to any of the allied countries."
