THE SALEYARDS QUESTION. . " ? ! [BI lIXECBAPH— CORBE9PONDKJT.I ; HAinxTOS, Tuesday. ' The saleyards question came before the Chamber of Commerce last night, when ' a deputation was set up to wait on the Borough Council to ask for a definite statement, as to when the improvement (f the yards will be undertaken, and as to the reason for the delay. .' . . The Mayor yesterday advertised requesting the business people to close on Friday, instead of Wednesday, this week. This action met with the disapproval of the Chamber of Commerce, and last night some of the members challenged the right of the Mayor to so act. It was resolved that Wednesday be observed as the holiday, as usual. This will lead to the same complications as arose on Anniversary Day, as the majority of the grocers and hairdressers and tobacconists are advertising that they will close on Friday, while the members of the ■ Chamber of Commerce are urged to support the resolution of the chamber. A heavy thunderstorm broke over the town about four o'clock this afternoon. Heavy rain has fallen for about four hours and still continues. This is the first fall since early in February, and it will be greatly appreciated, though it is feared it is too late to save many turnip crops, which were severely affected by the continued drought. A collision occurred in Victoria Street, opposite St. Peter's Church, about midnight on Monday, between a motor-car driven by Mr. Spiers and owned by Martin Brothers, of Ngaruaiwahia, and a 'bus coming from Frankton, belonging to Jury Brothers and driven by J. "bpeland. The* 'bus was considerably damaged, but the motor-car less seriously. None of tho occupants in either vehicle was injured. It is stated that the 'bus was on the right side of the road. Both vehicles were lighted, but there was a thick fog.
