GERMAN ACCOUNT OF THE FIGHTING AT DOUAUMONT.
ENEMY CLAIMS TO HAVE SECURED A SALIENT. BRANDENBURGERS STILL IMPRISONED IN THE FORT. London, March 3. A German communique states that on the heights of the Meuse, after vigorous artillery preparation, the Germans cleared the village Of Douaumont and advanced their lines west and south of the village and fort into a more favourable position. The communique claims that the Germans took 1000 prisoners and captured six heavy guns. French newspapers speculate on the significance of the German communique. Some are of opinion that the claim means that the German; nave driven in a wedge, thus securing a salient south-west of Fort Douaumont, though the French still prevent the relief of the Brandenburger*, who are in the ruins of the fort. The Paris newspaper Le Matin states that the Brandenburgers have been able to prolong their resistance by means of a narrow communication path through a coppice north of the fort.
