FRENCH COMMANDER HAS A BRILLIANT RECORD.
SERVICES IN THE GREAT RETREAT AND THE CHAMPAGNE COLONEL AT BEGINNING OF WAR, NOW GENERAL. (Received March 5, 5.5 p.m.) Paeis, March 4. General Petain, the French commander at Verdun, is a picturesque figure. He has risen from being a colonel to general since the war broke out. General Petain did useful work in the retreat from Charleroi and handled his men brilliantly during the Artois offensive in May and the Champagne offensive in September.
