A HOME-MADE MACKINTOSH.
A delightful mackintosh coat can be made at homo in the following way for a few shillings, and is just the thing to take with one on a country holiday. Make the _ coat or strong unbleached calico or white drill, using any ordinary paper pattern of a loose coat from which to cut it.
Then buy two pounds of white lead paint, ready mixed, and add to it half a pint of raw linseed oil. This thins it down to the right consistency. Well dampen the coat, roll up tightly, and leave for several hours, so that it is evenly damped all over. Cover _ a table with newspapers, ind while still quite damp lay the' coat - tit flat on it. Then paint it all over on ♦.he outside only. Use a fair-sized brush for doing this, and hold the coat firmly on the table with a bit of flat wood, to prevent it from slipping about. Then hang it up in the air to dry. Put on three or four coats of paint, allowing each to dry very thoroughly hefore adding another. The coat ehouhl then be quite soft and pliable, as well as waterproof. The great thing is to hive it damped evenly all over before beginning to paint it Unless it is prorxvlv damped it will be hard and stiff when done.
Another coat of paint can be put on at any time if the coat begins to look shabby or let in water.
