"TREATING" SOLDIERS.
MORE MISTAKEN KINDNESS.
A RKTTUVKD soldier was charged at ' the Police Court on Saturday before ' Mr. 1". V. Frazer, S.M., with using : obscene language- in Princes Street outside station. Sub-Inspector that tho defendant had been drunk, and that the case was another instance of mistaken kindness, the soldier, having been "treated" too well by his " friends." The man had done his duty to tho country, and he would, therefore, hesitate to ask the Bench to deal severely with him. The magistrate agreed with the subinspector that, the fact that the man had fought for his country .should be taken into consideration. lie appealed to dcfendant and his comrades to trv to keep from over-indulgence in liquor. Ho should remember that he was still wearing the King's uniform, and should try to avoid bringing discredit on it. Mr. "Frazer deplored the action of some people in doing all they could to make returned soldiers drunk, and he remarked that he had noticed that the Minister for Defence had ; intimated the likelihood of introducing [legislation to prevent the '•treating" of soldiers. | Ihe defendant was convicted and I ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. RAID ON A FOWL-HOUSE. Charles Munro and Peter tiraliam appeared for sentence in connection with the charges preferred against them on January 7 of stealing three fowls, valued at 10s j 6d, tho property of Myrtle Dunn, and also of being rogues and vagabonds in tnat they were found on enclosed premises at night without lawful excuse. Sub-Inspector Mcllveney stated that he had ascertained that nothing was previously known against Munro. "Both men had been in custody since January 7. and as they had volunteered for active service he suggested that the Bench should enter a conviction and order them to come up for sentence when called upon. He suggested, however, that they bo kept in custody until the reinforcements leave, when they should bo handed over to the charge of the military authorities. This suggestion was acted upon by the magistrate. MAINTENANCE OF CHILDREN. Frank Hayes appeared to answer a charge of failing to comply with a maintenance order in respect of his five children, who are inmates of the St. Mary's Industrial School. 'Hie arrears of pavment to October 4 last totalled £10 7s in respect to each child. After examination Hayes was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on each of tho five charges, each term to be concurrent; tho warrant to bo suspended provided he pays 2s 6d per week off the arrears on each o'der. making a weekly payment of 12s SI; the original order to be suspended during the time tho arrears arc being paid off. MISCELLANEOUS. Three first offenders were each fined 5s for drunkenness. Another was convicted [ and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, on condition that l.e left the town immediately. A fourth was convicted and fined the. amount of bis bail. ' 10s. A remand for a week was granted ! in the case of a first offender who is at I present in the hospital. I A remand was granted until Tuesday in I tho case in which Edward Sydney Croat I (Mr. R. A. Singer) was charged with stealing a ring, valued at 255, the property of Teresa Fheian.
