The establishment of a. winter garden in the Domain as a memorial of the Auckland Exhibition will soon bo an accomplished facti For some time past a large miniber of men lias been employed in excavate ing and levelling an area sun-ounding the site of the late, main Exhibition buildings. The hillside which stood behind the buildings has been levelled, and the neighbouring hollow has been filled in. A large area is now quite level, and is being topdressed preparatory to the sowing of gra-ss-seed. Plans are. being prepared by Mr. W. E. Bush, city engineer, for the winter garden. It was first proposed to import the structure, but. it i« believed that the. work can be dune satisfactorily locally. The garden will consist of a large, glass-house containing an extensive variety of tropical plants and shrubs. The roof will be high enough to permit of the growth of trees. The garden will be kept, at an even temperature in summer and winter by artificial means. The work that has been done in improvements in the Domain has cost the Exhibition Committee approximately £20.000. A sum of £5000 is in hand to cover the cost of the winter garden and the necessary work that wiLl bo entailed in finishing the grounds as proposed. The Domain is at present looking extremely well, but when the winter garden and the work on the surroundings is completed its attractiveness will bo greatly enhanced.
