Finding the Winning Numbers. The apparatus used in the drawings was that employed in the Crown land ballots. Ten marbles, bearing the numbers 0 to 9, were used. In the case of the silver art union, the last ticket sold was No. 190,000 —which won the second prize. Each time the marbles 0 and 1 were alone placed in the box, and whichever of these was drawn first determined whether the winning number should be one of six or five figures. Then all the numbers were placed in tin box five times, and one marble was drawn each time, so that a complete number of five or six figures was eventually compiled. When a number formed in this way proved to correspond with an unsold ticket, the process had to be repeated. All the tickets were arranged in consecutive order in trays, and the selected number was quickly found. There were 62 numbers drawn in connection with the silver art union. Of them, 26 were of six figures, including nine prize-winning numbers; 34 of five figures, including 17 prize-winning numbers; and two of three figures, which appeared consecutively, both winning a prize of £10 each. Altogether, the numbers of 34 unsold tickets were drawn. Eleven prizes were allotted on the first drawing, six on the second, six on the third, four on the fourth, and one -the first prize—not until the fifth.
