RUNNING THE GAUNTLET.
BRITISH SHIP IN SWEDEN. DASH FOR LIBERTY. Stockholm, January 9. The British steamer Gitano, which has been sheltering in the Swedish port of Norrkoping since the outbreak of the war, slipped out on New Year's Day, followed by Swedish torpedo-boats. A German torpedo-boat tried to capture the Gitano in Swedish waters, but the Swedish torpedo-boats forced it to desist. The Gitano reached Malmoe —on the Swedish coast opposite Copenhagenand left again for Gothenberg, farther north, to reach which it must cross a small stretch of international water in the Kattegat. Many German warships are lying in wait for it.
Norrkoping is on the Baltic coast of Sweden, 43 miles east of Moitana. The Gitano is a steamer of 1179 tons built in 1913 for T. Wilson. Sons and Co., of HulL
