PATRIOTIC RELIEF FUNDS.

RACING CLUBS' DONATIONS, AMALGAMATION" SUGGESTED. fBX XETx-GEAIH.— OWX COREXSFOXBEKT.]

' CFraisTfiHrßCH. Monday. [At a meeting of the South Canterbury | Jocke_, nub, 3 letter from the president of the Racing Conference, Sir Geo. Clifford, i was read as follows:—«' Very large soma j have been voluntarily dedicated to patriotic j purposes by the racing and trotting clubs ,of New Zealand. The absorption of such • offerings into a common fund will before long cause their origin to be forgotj ten. It has been suggested to me that their amalgamation for some acceptable I object would be of practical utility jin itself and might be made a cct- : tinning record of the patriotic unj selfishness of the contributing insti- ' tutions. The exact destination of the com- | bined fund is a matter for agreement with the War Funds Council recently appointed. The main point is to secure lasting recognition of the source of the contri- . butions and of the sacrifices made in accumulating so large a sum. My desire in addressing racing clubs is to obtain an (indication of the feeling of each club m j regard to this proposition, and to ascertain its willingness or otherwise to accept it. If it be generally welcomed further measures can be adopted to carry it out, but before any public step can be taken it is advisable that the clubs concerned j should, as speedily as possible, express poncurrenoe or the reverse." After discussion, the following resolution was adopted : "That this club, without committing itself definitely, is of opinion that the object suggested by the president of tie New Zealand Racing Conference is worthv of discussion, and suggests that the New Zealand Racing Conference and the New Zealand Trotting Association take the necessary steps to call a meeting of those interested, and thereat formulate some definite proposals to put before th* several clubs."
