ALLIED ARTILLERY IN GREEK TERRITORY.
RETREAT CONTINUED IN GOOD ORDER. FURIOUS ENEMY ATTACKS BEATEN OFF ALLIES FACE ODDS OF NEARLY FOUR TO ONE. Received December 12. 7.40 p.m.) London*, December 11. In a despatch from Athens, dated 9th inst, Mr. Martin Donohoe correspondent of the London Daily Chronicle, states that the allies continue to retreat- in good order. A quantity of artillery is already in Greek territory. Wounded in large numbers are arriving at the frontier station of Gieugelu. The fighting has been most severe. The allies repulsed furious attacks, and the French rearguard was heavily engaged. The attackers included German cavalry. A heavy German concentration is reported at Uskub and Philippopolis (in Bulgaria). The latest communique from General Sarrail, commander of the allied expedition, states that the retreat from the Cerna front was methodically effected, without great loss, though the attackers were heavily punished on the Bth and 9th. The French now occupy a front along the course of the Bojimia. Other telegrams estimate that 150,000 British and French are facing 250,000 Bulgarians and 150,000 Germans. The Paris newspaper Lo Journal states that at Salonika and on the surrounding hills and plains the allies are now in a position to resist attack, and are protected against surprise. The regrouping of units is proceeding methodically. It is reported at Salonika that. General von Gallwitz and the Germans occupied Gieugelu, in Servia, near the Greek border, on * the morning of the lOih inst.. but Mr. Donohoe says this report is not correct.
